Curate It Yourself is pleased to announce its participation to the Mediterranea 18 Young Artists Biennale that will take place in Tirana (Albania) from 4 to 28 May 2017.

The idea for Domesticated Generation arose from a reflection about the conditions of young artists, critics and curators, born in the end of the 80s and the beginning of the 90s, entering the contemporary art system.

Working in the contemporary art world often presupposes that emerging professionals make several personal and monetary sacrifices before being able to eventually be accepted within the system. Self-financed projects, precarious conditions and often unpaid jobs are the compromises that new generations need to accept in order to obtain the legitimacy of working in the institutional system or benefit from the visibility to take part to important events like Biennales. Nowadays institutional critique and its consequences on the art world have become part of the education of young artists and professionals providing them with an analytical tool to develop critical thoughts regarding the institutions.

Domesticated Generation is a creative territory within the Mediterranea 18 Young Artists Biennale that works as a parasite lacking autonomous life, strictly depending on the activities of the host. The project presents itself as a hybrid self- financed scenario that is reactivated by the interventions of its participants in an open-ended dialogue with the audience of the Biennale.

The different ways of working and producing art within this proposal are inspired by a “Do It Yourself” philosophy and by the capacity of the participants to find alternative methods to finance and consequentially produce and exhibit their works. The tension between dependency and autonomy is at the core of Domesticated Generation’s proposal. It aims to present, within the larger context of the 18th Mediterranean Biennale, an intermittent autonomous program constituted by its own visual identity, food, leisure activities, talks, screening sessions and artworks produced by the participating artists.
